Maternity Style Guide | What to Wear | Rikki Shepherd | Charlotte Michigan Photographer

Maternity photos are some of the most beautiful photos that a women can have done. I personally never had the opportunity during either of my pregnancies to have these photos taken, so when these amazing moms contact me, I am truly honored.

Pregnancy is amazing. Pregnant women are stunning! So when planning your outfit for your maternity session, dress appropriately. And by appropriately, I mean like the rockstar that you are.

Here are a few tips and outfit ideas for you:

1.) Dress for the weather. That skirts/sweater combo may be adorable but not when it is windy and 40 degrees.

2.) Dress for your location. If you are planning a session in a field with tall grass, at an apple orchard that involves a long walk, avoid the heels. Be sure to ask your photographer if heels are appropriate for the location. Speaking of shoes, avoid running shoes.

3.) No bright colors. Neon yellow/green, hot pink etc. avoid these please! They leave horrible color casts and do not blend well together.

4.) The green rule. If your session is in an open grassy field or you will be surrounded by trees filled with green leaves, do not wear green. You will be washed out by the color.

5.) Layers can be your friend. Want to avoid wearing a coat in the fall/winter? Layer your clothing. This will help keep warm & add a good variation of texture/color to your photos.

6.) Keep it simple. Accessories can make an outfit, but not if you are covered in them. Pick one statement.

You did it, you contacted your photographer, picked a date/time and location for your upcoming photo session. Woohoo! But then you ask yourself, what are we going to wear? I am going to share with you a few tips when it comes to selecting your clothing for a photo session, color scheme ideas, outfit examples for women and a few photos from past sessions that coordinated perfectly.

Clothing tips
1.) Dress for the weather. That skirts/sweater combo may be adorable but not when it is windy and 40 degrees.

2.) Dress for your location. If you are planning a session in a field with tall grass, at an apple orchard that involves a long walk, avoid the heels. Be sure to ask your photographer if heels are appropriate for the location. Speaking of shoes, avoid running shoes.

3.) Don't try to put together four outfits at once. Pick an outfit for the most difficult person in your family (in my family that would be me..lol), then play off of that outfit to dress everyone else.

4.) Matchy-matchy is not in. You do not need to all wear jeans & a white shirt. Please avoid this. Instead coordinate colors/patterns and match that way instead.

5.) Dress comfortably. If you normally wear jeans & a sweater or blazer on a night out, I wouldn't buy a dress for your session. If you feel awkward in your clothing it will show in your photos. Same rules apply for children. Let them help pick clothing if possible than they feel involved and excited.

6.) Dress for your shape/size. What I mean by this is, buy clothing that fits you. If your clothes are too big you will look frumpy. If your clothing is too tight, you will look uncomfortable. This goes along with dressing comfortably. Why spend time & money on photos if you hate how you look in your clothing?

7.) No bright colors. Neon yellow/green, hot pink etc. avoid these please! They leave horrible color casts and do not blend well together.

8.) The green rule. If your session is in an open grassy field or you will be surrounded by trees filled with green leaves, do not wear green. You will be washed out by the color.

9.) Layers can be your friend. Want to avoid wearing a coat in the fall/winter? Layer your clothing. This will help keep warm & add a good variation of texture/color to your photos.

10.) Keep it simple. Accessories can make an outfit, but not if you are covered in them. Pick one statement.
